An exhibition by Travis Hutchison @travis_xr presented by Materias Primas

For more than fifty years, Hollywood photographer Frank Diernhammer’s private archive went unseen. It holds his portraits of the gay men around him in 1970s Los Angeles: surfers, models, performers and friends. This Pride, it debuts in the desert.
JOY’N US brings together hundreds of vintage prints, silver gelatin portraits made at Diernhammer’s West Hollywood home, rare color 8mm film, and photographs from the 1975 LA Gay Pride Parade. The show also includes a limited-edition newspaper catalog of just 50 copies and Hutchison’s immersive VR installation, Antonio Lopez / Juan Ramos: Virtual Reality.

Materias Primas Presents MaryAnn Puls — Objects — Rearranged & Altered: Closing Reception + Carla Roth Sculpture Pop-Up

Join us Friday, October 16th from 4–7pm for the closing reception of Objects — Rearranged & Altered, featuring the work of MaryAnn Puls, along with a special pop-up exhibition of sculptures by Palm Springs artist Carla Roth.

Throughout Objects — Rearranged & Altered, Puls brings together painting, drawing, and assemblage, transforming repurposed materials and everyday observations into abstract compositions that are spontaneous, curious, and unexpectedly familiar.

For the closing evening, we’re excited to welcome Carla Roth to Materias Primas for a special presentation of her sculptural work. Roth’s forms make a natural companion to Puls’ exploration of objects, materials, and reorganization—bringing an additional three-dimensional element to the gallery for one night only.

With Modernism Week — October bringing design and architecture lovers to the desert, it’s a perfect evening to explore the Perez Art District, see MaryAnn’s exhibition before it closes, and discover Carla’s sculptures.

Materias Primas Presents MaryAnn Puls - Objects — Rearranged & Altered.

We’re excited to kick off the new season of 4th Friday Perez Art Walks with Objects — Rearranged & Altered, an exhibition of work by visual artist MaryAnn Puls.

Please join us Friday, September 25th from 4–7pm for our first opening of the season and an evening celebrating MaryAnn’s work.

Working across painting, drawing, and assemblage, Puls reorganizes observations, impulses, and everyday materials into an abstract visual language. Using primarily repurposed materials, she allows each work to follow its own script—transforming the familiar into compositions that feel unexpected, curious, and strangely recognizable.

MaryAnn lives and works between Portland, Oregon and Palm Springs, California, and we couldn’t be happier to open our season by sharing her work at Materias Primas.
